In anticipation of its 50th Anniversary season, Artpark announced the launch of an ambitious new commissioning initiative that will unite contemporary music, environmental technology, and immersive performance.
Conceived as part of Artpark’s forward-looking UltraSound programming, the project will commission five original works from a diverse group of composers and sound artists, including Brent Chancellor, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, John Kaefer, Ricardo Romaneiro, and Marcus Foster. Each artist will create music inspired by real-time bio-data collected from plant life throughout the Artpark campus and Niagara Gorge landscape.
The initiative aimed to transform biological activity into musical material, using specialized sensors and interactive technology to reveal hidden rhythms and frequencies within the natural environment. Organizers described the project as both a celebration of Artpark’s experimental artistic legacy and a reflection on humanity’s evolving relationship with nature and sound.
The commissioned works will be scheduled to premiere during Artpark’s 2024 anniversary season in a large-scale live performance event featuring chamber musicians, electronic soundscapes, and immersive visual elements. The announcement generated excitement among audiences and artists alike, positioning Secret Symphony of Plants as one of the centerpiece creative projects of Artpark’s milestone celebration.
